Give it to him

Turn on, tune in, cop out. Well you'll definitely get the first two with Jimmegee. As for the copping out bit you may be waiting a long time – as Jimmegee explores the dancefloor and the lives that rotate around it. Old enough to have those 80's originals and yet young enough to appreciate the 21st Century twist those same sounds now take, let Jimmygee take you on a trip. Electronically flavoured of course.

Regular readers of my column on the fabulous RealCity websites (top billing last month, honeys, oh, yeah!) will recall that I did say my minor Madonna obsession would spill out onto the page at some point. So here we are, Madge is back in town. She has fishnets and she intends to use them. What’s not to love?

I am ever so slightly nervous about this one, however. First up, it’s at the biggest venue she’s played in London for many years - Wembley Stadium - and while Earls Court and Wembley Arena were hardly miniscule, they do kind of pale in comparison. And then there’s the fact that the Confessions Tour was just so damned brilliant. It was the first live, non-DJ-led gig I’d been to that had all the energy, sweating and dancing of a Big Night Out in your favourite club. How the hell is she going to top that?

Madge has had a curious relationship with clubbing all through her career. Despite being a massive gay icon and being ‘born’ in the New York club scene of the early ‘80s, her songs rarely ever make it onto serious DJs’ playlists unexpurgated, unmixed and otherwise ‘unmessedaboutwith’. It’s as if there are two Madonna’s, the one that makes all the hit records and gets to number 1 and provides us with endless karaoke moments of pleasure and the one that hands over her ‘brand’ to pro remixers who then actually turn it into something you can dance to. Which is why Confessions - album, tour, memories - was, for me, such a highlight. Songs like ‘Jump’ and ‘Get Together’ really didn’t need messing about with in order to fill a dancefloor.

Either way, I’m sure besty-friend Jane (Confessions Launch Pyjama Party 2006) and I will be jumping and screaming with the best of them come September 11th. See you on the dancefloor / turf! x
